Remedy
by Michael Rathmayr

Remedy  explores the architectural and social history of Red Vienna’s most prominent bath house, the Amalienbad. Opened in 1926, Amalienbad was founded with community and the dismantling of class in mind. A working-class center for relaxation, the monumental art deco structure exemplifies socialist ideals and architecture from Vienna’s interwar period.

Today, the Amalienbad still accommodates swimmers and athletes of all ages, standing testimony to the lasting impact of a bygone, bright red utopia. Michael Rathmayr explores the bath house’s architecture and its interior with an eye for historical and architectural detail, while also illuminating the diversity of its contemporary visitors. The photographs show its pools, its backrooms, its opulent stained glass, and the visionary detailing that make the Amalienbad an object of social and cultural importance. With subjective nuance,  Remedy  ultimately examines one of Vienna’s most influential civic buildings on the eve of its 100th birthday.
