Lumes
by Adra Pallón

Lumes  is a homage to a way of life in Galicia that is coming to an end. In this region of Spain the cold march of progress has slowly and systematically ended a traditional way of life that goes back centuries. Lumes is a polysemic word that once described the fire that is lit in an inhabited home. This fire symbolized life and a gathering place for family and community. Now Lumes is associated with the forest fires that devastate the region every summer. These fires are the result of environmental degradation, depopulation, and industrialized forestry consuming this region. Now where once small farms and homesteads dotted the Galician mountains, pine forests rage in summer fires that blanket Europe in smoke.
