Jim Erwin, a photographer active in the 60's, ended his artistic practice to form a commercial studio in the 70's and gave up photography altogether by the mid-'80s.
During a move in 2021, Erwin asked his nephew if he was interested in his negatives otherwise he would throw them out. Jim’s nephew, Nick Meyer, took them and stored them in his studio for two years before he started to sort through the pictures.
The work collected in Archive was made between 1964 and 1968 by Erwin, mostly in Rochester, NY and Chicago, Ill, where Jim was a student. The images have been edited and sequenced by his nephew Nick Meyer, whom he gifted his negatives to rather than throwing them out. Meyer has constructed Archive , blindly imagining a visual narrative from these 50 year old pictures. This is the first collection of Erwin's work with thousands of negatives still to discover.
