Drowned in a Dream
by Susan A. Zadeh

A quintessential artist’s book, Drowned in a Dream comprises 25 photomontages by  contemporary artist Susan A. Zadeh. Alternating between the slightly strange and fantastic, Zadeh’s seductive and unsettling imaginary landscapes prerecord the soft submersion of Holland into the seas while also serving as a sort of personal diary.

“Forever daydreaming . . . after 37 years of living in Amsterdam, it was about time to make this village mine,” the artist writes. The result, an ongoing photographic series of more than 500 images, formed the source for Drowned in a Dream, the first monograph devoted exclusively to Zadeh’s work.

Persian by ancestry and birth, Zadeh moved to France as a child, and then to Holland as a teenager. She has lived in Amsterdam ever since. Originally trained as a classical dancer, after a 12-year career at the Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam she turned to photography and publishing. Zadeh became well-known as a champion of outsider artists through her seminal art magazine “Eyemazing”, which ran from 2002 to 2013 and which received a coveted Lucie Award. Since then, she has concentrated on her own work as an artist.

Produced in Holland and beautifully printed on matt art paper, Drowned in a Dream is bound in raw printer’s boards with an exposed spine. The first printing is limited to 500 slipcased copies, and is also available in a special edition with two signed original prints, and a deluxe edition with twelve signed original photographs printed by the artist.
